  Charles P. Johnson & Associates, Inc seeks a Design Engineer to join its Public Sector Division in Silver Spring, Maryland. The Design Engineer will primarily be responsible for designs of all aspects of stormwater management projects. The candidate must be able to complete complex hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, design water resources improvements including stream restoration, dam improvements, and storm drain and storm water management retrofits, prepare and obtain all approvals for all construction documents, handle client communications, and participate in construction observation and documentation efforts. This position will also be required to work with CAD technicians, surveyors, and sub-consultants as well as assist in the preparation of construction documents. The candidate will be required to communicate with the Public Sector Division Manager as well as other Project Managers on a daily basis.

  A BS in Civil Engineering or a related field is required. Must also be able to demonstrate intimate knowledge of and experience in the execution of stormwater management projects including phases of feasibility, conceptual design, construction document preparation, permitting, and construction management and documentation. Contracts and Marketing Specialist

Roles and Responsibilities

You will primarily be responsible for supporting the Public Sector office for contracts and marketing, in addition to supporting company-wide marketing conferences and events.


Job Duties

  • Finding and qualifying RFPs, RFQ, etc. along with planning, scheduling, and coordinating the production of proposals, presentations, and statements of qualification.

  • You will be involved with competitive proposals and presentations for municipal, state, and federal government agencies.

  • The ideal candidate has experience in preparing proposal, writing and developing proposal documents, assisting with gathering and organizing sub-consultant information, conducting and coordinating meetings and other related proposal development and marketing-related activities.

  • In addition to proposal preparation, this position will be responsible for attending networking events and conferences representing the firm outside of normal duty hours to include occasional weekends.

  • The position will also be responsible for all marketing materials, including but not limited branded giveaways, branded apparel, and corporate gifts.

  • Ideally the candidate will be able to create graphics for booths, banners, other booth presentation materials and brochures.

  • Has personal vehicle and is able to travel for business conferences and trade shows. Travel is 10% or less of regular duty hours.

  • Able to work outside normal duty hours for conferences, trade shows and networking events.

Senior Land Development Division Manager

MAJOR FUNCTION/ROLE

Provides leadership and oversight of design, production and coordination of conceptual and final design of civil engineering tasks.  Advises and recommends design procedures to staff and interfaces with clients and public agencies.  Must be experienced with typical civil engineering elements, to include roadways, site grading, stormwater management, earthwork erosion & sediment control, environmental compliance, ADA compliance, and pavement markings & signage.  Work involves analytical ability to select and recommend design procedures, interpret ordinances and specifications, analyze design requirements and provide design solutions.


Job Duties

  • Manage a staff of 5 to 10 engineers and technicians.

    • Monitor workload and scheduling

    • QA/QC and PE seal plans

  • Coordinate land development projects with the client, agencies, and CPJ staff.

  • Actively participate in marketing efforts.

  • Read and interpret survey data, legal description, government standards and codes, and applies to design.

  • Prepare site and subdivision plans for residential, commercial and industrial projects in Anne Arundel County, Montgomery County or Prince George’s Counties, to include storm water management, storm sewer plans and profiles, outfall analysis, sanitary sewer plans and profiles, water line plans and profiles, water network analysis, public street design, erosion and sediment control plans, fire lane plans, pavement designs, pavement striping and signage plans, maintenance of traffic plans, bond estimates and bond reductions.

  • Assist clients with bonding and permitting procedures.

  • Assist other company departments in the preparation of re-zonings, infill lot grading plans and preliminary plats.

  • Interact with County staff, clients, members of the public and elected and appointed officials. Possible attendance at night meetings.

  • Involvement with industry related associations/organizations will be expected.


Required Skills and Experience

  • Competent in AutoCAD and Civil 3D

  • Above average written and oral communication skills

  • Project organizational and time management skills

  • 15+ years of experience as a land development engineer, preferably in Maryland.

  • 5+ years of experience as an engineering manager and/or project manager supervising engineers and/or planners.

  • Good knowledge of the land development entitlement process thru local and state agencies.

Senior Level Planner/Landscape Architect

The CPJ Silver Spring office is looking for a senior level Planner/Landscape Architect to take a leadership position in the Planning Division of the Silver Spring MD office.  The position includes direct mentorship of junior staff and working with staff to develop design drawings.  The position requires regular meetings with the clients and agencies and a complete understanding of the regulations that govern the design, review and approval processes within the various local agencies. The applicant will be responsible for a staff that includes other landscape architects, site designers and CADD technicians. We are looking for an applicant that will participate in organizations and activities related to the industry and contribute to the CPJA marketing effort.

Job Duties

The applicant will be responsible for preparing and managing a wide range of large and small projects including residential, mixed use, commercial and institutional. This will include preparation of project proposals, staff management and billing.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture (PLA/RLA required).

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in site planning and landscape architectural design.

  • Graphic design presentation skills are required. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
