Charles P. Johnson & Associates, Inc. (CPJ) seeks an energetic, highly motivated Mid-Level/Senior Civil Engineer to join our Fairfax, Virginiaoffice. The ideal candidate will serve as the lead Civil Engineering Designer overseeing the production of various types of engineering plans in multiple jurisdictions in Northern Virginia. The candidate should have Team Leadership Experience, Technical Expertise, Critical Decision-Making Skills, and some Public Relations Savvy. The Mid-Level/Senior Civil Engineer candidate knows how to be a team player as well as lead a team to success.

Major Function/Role

Provides leadership and oversight of design, production, and coordination of conceptual and final design of civil engineering tasks. Advises and recommends design procedures to staff and interfaces with clients and public agencies. Role Summary: 

Duties include but are not limited to conducting daily inspections on buildings, stormwater management and site development construction projects to ensure compliance with construction documents, permits, and other contract requirements. The majority of the work for this role is performed in a field setting with exposure to the physical demands and hazards associated with construction and other outdoor sites.

Job Duties: 

  • Review project drawings, details, and specifications to familiarize with design, construction sequence, and permit requirements.

  • Coordinate with in-house design staff and client representatives to understand design intent of projects and ensure achievement throughout construction process.

  • Prepare daily inspection reports with photo logs of construction projects, including NPDES reporting, and monitor contractors' compliance with project schedule. Coordinate with CPJ design staff to understand design intent of projects and ensure achievement throughout construction process.

  • Review Contractors' payment requests to verify the progress of the project and completed quantities.

  • Coordinate field adjustments to minimize impacts to natural resources or adapt to existing site conditions.

  • Coordinate review of submittals, RFls, samples, as-built drawings, etc. prepared by Contractor and work with other staff to meet contract requirements.

Required Skills:

  • Must be able to pass a drug and background check to perform inspections at government and childcare facilities.

  • Ability to learn quickly, as training on stormwater management will be provided.

  • A minimum of three years of progressively responsible construction permitting inspection or management experience including substantive work in site development and stormwater management projects.

  • An Associate Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Surveying, or another related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

  • A valid driver's license unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive CPJ vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.

Junior Civil Engineer
